About The Paediatric Injectable Medicines Handbook (PIMH)

The Paediatric Injectable Medicines Handbook (PIMH) was first formulated as the Intravenous Drug Dilution Guidelines in 1996. Its’ use and purpose has evolved to include intramuscular and subcutaneous routes and was renamed. The PIMH has become a valuable clinical resource for parenteral medicine administration in children across a wide clinical audience including NSW Health and external paediatric sites. It provides summarised, evidence-informed referenced guidelines for preparing and administering medicines to children via the intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous routes. The PIMH is not intended to guide parenteral medicines administration in adults. It does not describe all clinical situations, medicines, doses or comprehensive information on medicines such as contraindications, adverse effects and monitoring. The PIMH should be supplemented as necessary with other clinical resources including local medication protocols or specialist paediatric and neonatal publications. Limited information for administration of medicines in neonates is included for those medicines that do not appear in The Australasian Neonatal Medicines Formulary (ANMF). The PIMH contains published information including several specialist paediatric resources available at the time of compilation. It is compiled and edited by the Medicines Information Specialist Pharmacist in collaboration with The Medical Manager (editor) paediatric pharmacists, nurses, clinicians and the SCHN Medication and Therapeutics Committee (MTC) clinical experts. The online PIMH supersedes any hardcopy publications. Medicine monographs are regularly reviewed and updated. Additional information and medicine monographs are compiled periodically as needed and on request.
